Don’t know where to start?

Don’t know where to start?

Do you want to get fitter, or healthier, or lose weight but don’t know what to do at all?
I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve heard, “I don’t know where to start” or asked “where do I start?”
Usually, those who say this to me have tried all the diet groups, faddy diets, fitness classes, and everything available out there. And failed. Well, ultimately.

And why?

Does that sound familiar?

So why?
The answer is simple, you keep having the wrong approach, or trying the wrong things, or pursuing methods that aren’t efficient or don’t work, and you continually battle between various methods you are led to believe work, without having the correct knowledge on what does work and why. And you maybe haven’t discovered your own “why” or goal motivation properly or deeply enough yet. (and that is a huge thing)
With all that in mind, the continuing cycle of failure and re starting leads you to not knowing where to start. Properly. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t everyone, maybe your on top of your game in self success, and that’s amazing! Keep doing it! For those who don’t know where to start, you will find this lengthy but insightful blog very worthwhile.
You always have a goal in mind, and so do those I have spoken to in the past, for anyone who works with me, we go beyond just “I want to lose weight and tone up” we discover why you have that goal, where it came from, why now, what drove you to feel the need for change, and what it means to you to achieve it. I find it really important to establish what the “why” is about a goal or desire, it gives the approach and the journey a lot more solidity, and stronger purpose. It holds a substance that has meaning to you.

Starting out can be scary, daunting, and stressful, and the thought of potentially changing your whole lifestyle might be something you really don’t want to do. And lots of people don’t start at all because of this, and struggle continually through life, never being able to look or feel as they want to, and why?
They don’t know where to start.

Maybe you are reading this because you don’t know where to start either?
I’ve even been there myself, in my early twenties (I hate to say that was 16 years ago now). I became fixated on my body, and my weight, and I was the same, I didnt know where to start. I knew exercising would make me lose “weight” so I did that firstly, in whatever way I could. Group fitness classes, Muay Thai, gym workouts, CrossFit, basically whatever I could get to. I understood nothing about how my body worked, and often injured myself with incorrect form, and poor pointless exercise programs. I exercised to excess and couldn’t understand why the scales didn’t move, and why I still felt fat. (I will add here at this stage I was around 8st 7lbs, but carried extra body fat and next to no muscle, I will get onto that another day). The amount of correct info wasn’t really readily available then like it is now, (there’s LOTS of wrong info and advice out there now too!) so I thought the next thing to do was restrict my food. I spent months and years under eating and overtraining in a bid to lose the fat I desired, whilst over the course of trying I was losing self esteem and confidence due to the feeling of failure. I didn’t know what to do, and the approach to my start was all wrong. Thank fully I know that now, and it’s that which drove me to where I am right now. Over a lot of years I began to pick things up, i researched, and I worked with a personal trainer, and I started to understand that all those years of over training and under eating did nothing but burn my muscle, retain my body fat, and destroy my self worth because I felt I continually failed when I tried my absolute hardest!
I’ve been there.

So where do you start?
I still meet and observe people taking the wrong approach, and I don’t ever want anyone else to take the journey I did.

  1. Reach out to me. Tell me if my story resonates with you. Or tell me you feel like you get nowhere with what you try. Ask someone for help who knows how to coach your lifestyle the right way.
  2. Don’t ever think you need to train 5 days a week and totally kill yourself, then live off eating chicken, broccoli and rice, for 4 meals a day, washed down with a protein shake. Your lifestyle doesn’t need to drastically change, or certainly it doesn’t need to change fast.
  3. If you want to make a start and a change today, begin with small positive changes. Make some swaps, ask for help, and remember it’s never too late to start. You are never too unfit. You are never a lost hope.

I hope my story has given you some insight, and perhaps some hope that you can start anytime. Reach out for the right help, it’s always going to be a positive journey.
